Why DUN doesn't work

Microsoft decided in WM5 AKU3 (an update to Windows Mobile 5) to remove DUN in favor of Bluetooth ICS (Internet Connection Sharing.)

This is a generally good move: it means that the phone turns in to a small Bluetooth router, which several devices can connect to. There are several other perks to this method. Read http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2007/04/17/why-did-we-remove-bluetooth-dun.aspx if you're interested in the reasons.

The downside, however, is that the tablets do not support Bluetooth networking out of the box.

The Easy Fix

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1400709 details a hack that will re-enable DUN on most WM5AKU3/WM6 PDAs.

At this point, please visit either GUIDE: Everything about CDMA-like Providers (Verizon, Sprint) and DUN or GUIDE: Everything about GSM Providers (T-Mobile, Cingular) and DUN for the next steps.

The Hard Fix

Start with HOWTO:_Connect_to_the_Internet_using_Bluetooth_via_a_Windows_PC.

A more specific article will be added later: what you need to know is that your phone, when Bluetooth ICS is on, becomes a Bluetooth access point. Skip the configuration on the Windows side, other than turning on Bluetooth ICS, but do pair your phone and PDA together.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It appears that page is missing the last half as of this writing. I'll try to piece together a guide from the instructions on the old site, but I don't have a Windows Mobile phone to test with. --Aleksandyr 15:24, 19 January 2008 (EST)
