Setting Up Swap on MMC

From Internet Tablet Talk

When the 770 was first released, many folks had problems with "out of memory" errors while browsing media heavy websites or running several applications at once. Firmware updates have since reduced the problem greatly, but some power-users wishing to boost the memory available on their 770 at the cost of reducing the life of their mmc card can enable swap to increase the number of applications that can be run simultaneously. Enabling swap is not for the faint of heart, it root access and some familiarity with the Linux shell.

It's also worth noting that the Load Applet can help you monitor available memory and close unneeded applications before the 770 gets "bogged down".

Some relevant links:

  • Wolfram Ravenwolf's Extended Root Filessystem Howto is the best single resource available on expanding the capabilities of your 770, and now includes information on setting up swap. His setup also leaves the majority of your mmc card readable by windows and mac systems, and does not affect your ability to plug the 770 into such systems and have it recognized as a drive.
  • The Syncing Apple has a discussion on setting up swap without extending the root filesystem.

On the N810 running OS2008 swap (called "virtual memory") can be set-up via the tablet's control panel in "memory" settings, accessible via the settings menu.
