Screenprotectors

What are they

A screen protector consists of a sheet of transparent plastic that one sticks onto the screen. Although the Nokia Tablets already have a screen protector, it is meant only as a shipping protection, and will wear down pretty quickly.

Why use one

There are various reasons why one would use one:

  • protect the screen from scratching
  • reduce glare
  • make fingerprints less visible
  • make the screen less slippery for writing with a stylus

There are also reasons not to use them:

  • reduced brightness
  • fuzzyness (especially the glare reducing types)
  • duller colors

Around 60% of the forum members prefers to use one.

Types

Screen protectors are usually of either the 'anti-glare' or the 'clear' type. The first type reduces reflection, and makes the screen less slippery, but as a downside may make the screen slightly fuzzy and the colors dull. The latter does not look much different from a uncovered screen, but is somewhat slippery to write on. Another distinction is the way the protector is attached to the screen. Some are glued while others are removable like a Post-It.

Brands

Popular brands on this forum are are:

  • Brando
  • Boxwave
  • invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG
  • Vikuiti by 3M

These can be ordered with the same dimensions as the Internet Tablet screen.

How to apply

If you just stick it on the screen without any preparation you will have air bubbles under the protector. To apply them as bubble free as possible do the following:

  • Turn on a hot shower for 15 minutes or so. This will cause dust in the air to cling to the water droplets. Once you turn off the shower and the steam has disappeared you will have a fairly dust-free room.
  • Remove the grease from your hands and the screen with some alcohol drenched cloth.
  • Peel off the original screen protector. You may think you don't have one but it's there. To get hold of one of its edges stick some tape on the edge and pull it off hard.
  • Remove any remaining dust from the screen with scotch-tape, Post-It or an air duster (can of compressed air, such as those by Fellowes).
  • Put on the new screen protector. Start on one side while pushing out the air bubbles with a credit card.
