ViewsNetworking:openSSH on the Nokia 770From Internet Tablet Talk
IntroductionOpenSSH is a free version of the SSH (secure shell) protocol suite of network connectivity tools. It's the most versatile version of secure shell and is more useful (and therefore valuable) secure shell than other secure shells such as Dropbear SSH connects your 770 to other devices and computers using an encrypted networking protocol that is commonly referred to as a 'tunnel', or VPN (virtual private network). All traffic, especially passwords, between your 770 and other devices is safeguarded from eavesdropping, connection hijacking and other network-level attacks by OpenSSH - it provides a myriad of secure tunneling capabilities and a variety of authentication methods. SSH features support for X (the X Window System). Your fathers and grandfathers used telnet, rlogin and ftp which transmit passwords unencrypted and only allow for command line sessions. You don't live in the world they lived in - with X, your sessions can include applications with graphical touchscreen interfaces. You have to install OpenSSH yourself, however, because Nokia didn't foresee the implications of SSH and its support for X forwarding when the 770 was designed. We know this because Nokia locates OpenSSH under 'Command Line Based System Tools'. SSH on the meamo desktopOpenSSH commands to connect you to the files and applications on other devices can be captured in icons and placed on your 770 desktop so that you can run and fully interact with them with nothing more than a tap on the screen, no matter where they may be in the world, no matter where you may be. With a tap to the display you can open a graphical display to a supercomputing cluster and use it securely just as if you were sitting beside it. Try that with your father's PDA.
