Internet: Reducing web data traffic

From Internet Tablet Talk

It can be useful to reduce the amount of data being downloaded when you browse the web, particularly over a slow connection or if your costs are based on usage.

The primary approach for reducing the amount of data transfered is to eliminate some elements of the web page (ideally without adversely they layout or usability of the page). Advertisements, Flash objects, images, and Javascript are all things that can be removed. See Ad Blocking. You can also turn off Flash and images entirely in the Microb browser options.

Some sites offer reduced-content pages for mobile browsers (eg. cellphone browsers, iPhones, etc). There are also "proxy servers" (proxies) which download the full web page to a server on the Internet, but then only forward parts of it to you and your web browser. For both topics see: Custom Styles.

Through judicious use of these techniques it should be possible to substantially reduce the amount of data being downloaded as you browse the web.
