Fonts

Install culmus package from gplsystems.com repository.

It is also useful to install microsoft truetype fonts (arial, tahome, etc.) To do this, create directory /home/user/.fonts, copy fonts from some source to this directory, and run (as user) the command fc-cache.

Encoding

Some applications use iconv for charset, so you need to install the package more-gconv-modules from mg.pov.lt repository. After installing this package, you need to run (as root) the command iconvconf /usr/lib/more-gconv/.

Input

There are four input methods:

  1. On screen keyboard - There are three options for adding Hebrew support to the on screen keyboard:
  2. On screen thumb keyboard - The last method for on screen keyboard also provides on screen thumb keyboard in Hebrew.
  3. Hardware keyboard (N810 only) - Download the file http://my.arava.co.il/~matan/770/heb/rx-44 and copy it (as root) over /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-44. Now you need to run the command setxkbmap us-he after every boot. After running this command the key "Chr" acts as a shift for Hebrew and "Shift-Chr" as a lock for Hebrew.
  4. External (bluetooth or USB) keyboard.
