Koen Kooi took the GpsDrive source code last month and compiled it for Maemo — voila, a new port. (He wrote "The config-dialogs will need some serious UI loving, though." You can see why he says this at his site.)
This is seriously cool, chiefly because, as Alexander wrotein a comment at Koen’s blog: "770 will be able to connect to the Bluetooth-equipped GPS receiver using BT Serial Port profile. All you need for that is to get a console and configure BT connection."
So on a hike or journey you can carry your GPS receiver and view your location on a NASA satellite image or street map on your beautiful 770 display, where you can see some detail! I wouldn’t want to try that with a laptop :-) (more)
I asked Koen what a street map image looked like in Maemo, and he pointed me to this image of a Sharp c700:

Fritz Ganter, who wrote GpsDrive, describes it this way:
"GpsDrive is a car (bike, ship, plane) navigation system. GpsDrive displays your position provided from your NMEA capable GPS receiver on a zoomable map, the map file is autoselected depending of the position and prefered scale. Speech output is supported if the ‘festival’ software is running. The maps are autoselected for best resolution depending of your position and can be downloaded from Internet. All Garmin GPS reveiver with a serial output should be usable, also other GPS receiver which supports NMEA protocol."
